PLAY COMPETITION
NEW ZEALAND ENTRY WINS
(From "The Post's" Representative.) SYDNEY, December 9.
The annual play competition conducted by Bryant's Playhouse concluded with the presentation of four plays which won the preliminary rounds. The winning production, by the unanimous decision of the three judges, was "Machine Song," an unusual and forceful play by Mr. A. Coppard, of New Zealand.
In "Machine Song," Mr. Coppard set out to show the servicfe of man, the slave, to the machine, his master, through the spoken thoughts of Joe Smith at his factory job. Miss Beatrice Tildesley, in summing up the opinions of herself and the other judges, said that "Machine Song" had unusual emotional value, and gave a moving conception of the ideas of a simple factory worker who was dominated by his machine.
Altogether, 140 plays were entered for the competition, and* 16 were performed by members of Bryant's Playhouse. Another New Zealand entry, "Follow On," by "Lindo Loyatt" (the real name was not disclosed here), gained third place.
