SMALLER SECTIONS

HOUSING AT PORIRUA

SUBDIVISION REFUSED

Criticism of a proposal by the Department of Housing Construction to reduce the area of building sites on land at Porirua under offer to the Department by providing for four houses instead of three as in the original sub-

division was expressed at the meeting of the Malcara County Council today.

A letter was received from the Director of Housing Construction (Mr. A. Tyndall) stating that, providing the council approved, he did not anticipate any difficulty in obtaining Ministerial approval of the reduced areas in the event of purchase by the Department. Councillor R. W. Mexted opposed the new subdivision suggested, and said that when houses on small sections became old they took on the appearance of slums. An old house on a reasonable section could always be made to look attractive. The council should not be asked to break its own bylaws, and the Government should be the last to try to bring about the condition suggested.

Other councillors expressed the opinion that the tendency with the State housing scheme was to put as many houses as possible on the land ac-

quired

On the motion of the chairman (Mr. E. Windley). it was decided to reply that the proposed subdivision was not in accordance with the council's bylaws, and that the council had approved of the original subdivision years ago and part of the land was already built upon.

I don't think we should allow this sort of thing to creep in," said Mr. Windlcy.
