PRISONERS KILLED

ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE

FORMER IRON GUARD MEN

(Received December 1, 11.20 a.m.)

BUCHAREST, November 30,

Fourteen former members of ihe Iron Guard, including their former leader, M. Zelea Codreanu, and the murderers of Dr. Duca (the former Premier) and of M. Stelescu (an Iron Guard leader who broke away from M. Codreanu) were shot dead while try-

ing to escape,

While they were being transported from a Moldavian prison to a military gaol in Bucharest the prisoners' cars were antrmsneci in a forest by M. Codreanu's supporters. The prisoners jumped from the cars and were shot by guards as they fled.

(Received December 1, 1.10 p.m.) LONDON, November 30. The Bucharest correspondent of the British United Press says that the shooting of M. Codreanu is believed to mark the reopening of a bitter fight between King Carol's authoritarian regime and the Iron Guard. The Bucharest correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph" says that the attempted rescue is believed to be part of intensified Iron Guard activities. The imprisoned leaders have been moved from prison in recent weeks as the result of suspicion of a plot to free them. Three hours, after the shooting the bodies were buried without ceremony at Jilava Fortress, 40 miles from the scene. The circumstances of the | shootings created a painful impression. Immediate consequences are unlikely because of police and military precautions.
