SUCCESSFUL ROSE SHOW

MANY FINE BLOOMS

Roses held pride of place in the Karori Horticultural Society's show which was opened yesterday by the Bishop of Wellington, the Rt Rev. H. St. Barbe Holland. There were many other beautiful blooms of early summer flowers, the entries in the cut flower, decorative, and children's classes being Especially numerous.

Introducing the Bishop, Mr. G. S. Nicholl, president of the society, said it was appropriate that he should open the society's show, for the society was founded by a church. It had been thought that noney would be made out of the shows, but that had been found to be quite an erroneous expectation. The season had not been very favourable, but the quantity and quality of the exhibits was pleasing. Bishop Holland referred to the universality of the rose and how it had been referred to in literature throughout the ages. It had been an inspiration to poets and writers and was the most famous of all flowers. The sight of it growing in New Zealand reminded him of his homeland.
