MERCANTILE LEAGUE
Umpires were instructed at a meeting of the .Wellington Mercantile Cricket League management committee last night to report any cases of players participating in games while not wearing proper cricketing attire.
There were present Messrs. J. J. Furlong (chairman), S. W. Martin, J. Young, E. W. Killick, C. E. Wayne, A. Ramsay,. G. L. Morrison, L. E. Downes, E. R. Martin, and W. C. Kruck, I. E. Allen, and D. Calcinai (umpires' representatives).
The umpires' delegate, Mr. D. Calcinai, reported that three players had been warned that they were contravening rule 6a, which provided: No player shall be allowed to take part in any of the' league's games unless attired in the regulation cricket dress.
It was pointed out that the committee had power to suspend such players and also fix a penalty on the offending team.
It was decided that no official championship games would be played on Saturday in view of the day being set aside for special fixtures.
The following managers were appointed for Saturday's games:—At Basin ReseiWe, Mr. G; L. Morrison; at Hut| Recreation Ground, Mr. W. C. Kru£k; Kilbirnie, Mr. J. Young; Karon*. MriC. L. King; Athletic Park, Mr..D. Calcinai.
The Wellington City Council Club was granted the right to register black and gold as its colours.
Fifteen nominations were received from clubs for players to receive coaching from Mr. Sheffield and were referred to the selectors.
Following are the positions of the teams in the lower grades:—
B Grade.—Justice Department, Niven-Clarke 20, Ulm 16, Smith and Smith 9, Greys 8, Gasco, Tramways 7, Celtic, Sargoods, Telephone Exchange 4. ..
C Grade.—Audit Department 20, Atlantic Union 17, Excelsior 15, Ross and Glendining 14, Berhampore 9, Seatoun 8, State Advances 6, Ferguson and Osborn, Pastimes, Wright, Stephenson 4.
D Grade;—H.M.V. 20, Labour Bureau 16, Bonds Hosiery 15, Milk Departmentlo, A.0.T.N., Star Stores 7, Self Help 6, Printing 5, Shipping 4, Labour-Tourist 1.
E Grade.—Customs Department 14, Burch and Co.,- Duthies, Insurance B 12, National Bank 10, Insurance A, Taxes Department, Thompson Bros. 7, Central, Lands and Survey 5.
F Grade.—Harbour Board, Moore Wilson 15, J. R. McKenzies 12 Printing 11, Shipping/Woollen Co. 6, General Motors 5, Rovers 4.
G Grade.—City Council 20, Colonial Carrying Co. 15, Taubmans 14, Telephone Exchange 10, P. and T. Stores 7, Gasco, Taxes Department 6, Dominion Motors 3.
The recording secretary, Mr. E. f£ Martin; announced that the leading teams in the Heinemann Cup competition were: City Council 1253 runs, Harbour Board A 1156, General Motors 1081, Harbour Board B 102*, Amalgamated Bricks 978, National Bank 978, Prestige Hosiery 976, Audit Department 948, Atlantic Union 928, Duthies 921, Customs Agents 915.
