Foalings at Tarwyn .'PaUk Stud, New South Wales, this year anclutte a naifbrother by imported .J. IR. Smith to the New Zealand Berby and A.J.C. Metropolitan winner, Royal Chief. Modiste -EL, dam of the pair, was purchased by her present owners at the dispersal, sale of 'the Westmere Stud, New Zealand, and her colt by Beau Pere realised SSO guineas at the last Sydney yearling sales. The latest addition to the family represents the oldest stock of J. R. Smith, a wellperformed son of Gainsborough whose foals are described as very good looking and possessing great constitution and character. J. R. Smith is a •blood-cblouxed bay, and the fact that he is producing a lot of chestnut foals sHouas an, interesting topic. Mr. Munter >WMte,; who has sent a .mare to ,him each ;year, j was intrigued as to how it-came .abo.ut, and a tabulated pedigree compiled lbyv him, with- colours showing to the .sistth" generation, reveals little ■chestnut. , X R. Smith's sire, jgrandsire, great-; grandsire, and so-on back tto -the sixiiih male-tail generation were -all i>ays, though Cyllene, whose mame .appears in the maternal side of the =peßigree, is a strong chestnut strain, and inbreeding to Bend Or might have some influence also. Further, Mr. WMte recalls having seen a light chestnut colt by Gainsborough (sire.iof J. JR. Bmith) at Lady Dougfes's Stud. '
