SAFETY WEEK

PLANS FOR CAMPAIGN

PROCESSION THROUGH CITY

A BIG SHOW

The final meeting of the executive committee of the Safety Week Campaign was held yesterday afternoon under the chairmanship of. the DeputyMayor, Councillor M. F. Luckie, who is also a member of the Road Safety Council. The lines 'for action were drawn out, and between now and midday on Monday, when the campaign opens, the sub-committees will be thoroughly busy.

Arrangements for the procession' were particularly discussed, for this' [opening demonstration, though lasting only an hour or so, calls for a great' j deal of organising work. -The procession will be headed by six special Safety Week floats being prepared by the Transport Department, which floats WilL on Monday afternoon set out for the north, passing through each centre on the main route to Aucklarid either on the journey north or "on the return. Similarly, special;; floats -will leave CHristchurch on Monday for Dunedin | and. way. p0rt5....... *■■:■:>":.' ; | j So far the marshals' of the proces- i sion; Mr. W. A. Sutherland/ of the/ Automobile Association, arid Mr. P. Hazledon, of the City Traffic Office; and the local secretary of the Wellirigton committee,, Mr. .T. W.1 JarileS oft the Town; Clerk's;. department, have not completed their lists of vehicles, j j but already so many inquiries have been made .that 7 it is likely that the ! procession will be quite the biggest event of that kind put on in Wellington. As the campaign is first' and | foremost a safety propaganda week the committee naturally expects that trade and other vehicles will carry slogans with a "safety first" bias. The City Council, Fire Brigade, Free Ambulance, and other local authority activities will be well represented, and there will be a mechanised military detachment, if arrangements can be made in the little time left. Another j [suggestion .made yesterday was that | the Red Cross and St. John Ambuj lance should be invited to send nurs- j ing and first-aid units. The evils-of-drink will have a definite place in the procession. Victoria College students are to be asked to be along, capping procession fashion, and as they are able to produce striking effects at remarkably short notice, with or without properties, the probability is that they will be there. . ; • The representative of < the garage proprietors was late in getting to the meeting. He was asked by the chairman if he had any sufficiently smash-1 ed-up wreck for display (four points having been selected to show what happens to a car in a bad crash). "You can't have it," he replied, "It* goes in j the procession behind a tow wagon, I and there will be others." : . j There will be two, and / possibly I three bands and probably also radio j music. If there is a sufficient entry of specially-prepared .. floats a cash prize will be given by. the Transport, Department;, inquiries should be, made of the marshals.-'.' All ..floats ."and vehicles are to report for marshalling at midday on Monday 'in Waterloo Quay, on the'west side, facing-south, and as a very big turn-out is expected drivers should -report promptly. STICKERS AND POSTERS. v The Transport Department has had prepared a million and a quarter stickers, leaflets, posters, strips, and slogans of various kinds. Wellingtori's share will be distributed between now and Monday, largely by the roundsmen of the City Milk Department in residential areas and by special delivery to/the city and suburban shops and offices. Their effectiveness will depend upon the cb-ope^ation of those to whom they are distributed, on which score the department and the local committee have no doubts Whatever. '■' The clergy -of all denominations have been communicated with and have been requested to make special! mention of the campaign during their: services on Sunday next. Such replies'! as had been received'up tilj. yesterday's meeting were in unanimous agreement with the purpose of , the campaign. , As the schools will next week still be in the midst of year-end examinations it is ndt considered advisable to bring children into the city to take part in the " procession, but every school will be visited during the week by traffic inspectors and others and addresses will be given on road safety practices...
