DUNEDIN WOMAN
JUMP FROM HOTEL WINDOW
SYDNEY SENSATION
(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.)
SYDNEY, November 25.
A sensational plunge to instant death from a fourth storey window of the Hotel Australia occurred this evening during the height of the city shopping crush, the victim being a D.unedin woman, Miss Muriel Hare, aged about 50.
The body fell on the tram track in Castlereagh Street with a terrific thud. A girl employed at the Prince Edward Theatre directly opposite was apparently the only actual eye-witness. She uttered a piercing scream when she saw the woman hurtling through the air. A strange feature of the tragedy was that the body cleared the verandah of the Hotel Australia, giving the impression that Miss Hare leapt well forward with the deliberate intention of missing it in plunging to her death.
The body was shockingly injured, particularly the head. An enormous crowd gathered, and traffic was brought to a standstill while an ambulance moved the body and a fire brigade eliminated the traces of the tragedy.
The police have ascertained that Miss Hare was due to sail by the Awatea at 5 o'clock tonight for Wellington. She returned to the hotel in a taxicab after a shopping expedition, and hurried upstairs 15 minutes before the sailing hour. She leapt to her death without acquainting anybody of her intentions. The taxicab was actually waiting to take her to the Awatea when her body crashed on to the tram track.
Miss Hare booked in at the. Hotel Australia on November 4. Since then she had absented herself for brief periods in order to go into hospital and to pay a visit to Canberra, but no motive for her act could be discovered beyond a strong suggestion - that her health was not good. (Received November 26, 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Speaking on the radiophone from1 the Awatea, Captain Davey said that men had been searching the ship for Miss Hare, whose ticket and luggage were on board. He added that when Miss Hare came to Sydney on the Awatea on November 4 she was most cheerful. i
