SPECIAL EVENTS FOR NEXT WEEK

TOWN-COUNTRY AND OTHER ATTRACTIONS

After the sparkling cricket of last Saturday there will be a much keener anticipation of the special events listed for next week. On Wednesday and Thursday the annual Town v. Country match is to be played at the Reserve, and this should afford some interesting cricket with players on trial for Plunket Shield honours. From the selection of die teams it is evident that the match will not serve as a strict trial between the strength of town and country, but it will have the value of giving quite a number of players a taste of the representative atmosphere. , Championship play will be suspended next Saturday, and in its place there will be a round of special matches, being staged in aid of the Playing Fields Fund. Undoubtedly the main attraction will be the match in which "stars" of the past will be taking part.

There is quite an experimental touch about the Wellington selector's team to meet the Country representatives next week. It would seem that Alf. Duncan has an eye to the future. At any rate, he appears to be out to give youth its chance.

A matter of special interest so far as the Town-Country match is concerned is that the newly-ap-pointed coach, Roy Sheffield, is to captain the Town teamfl It was as wicketkeeper, as well as batsman, that Sheffield made his mark for Essex, and he is to take the gloves in next week's match. In doing so, he will be in a position to gain an accurate line upon the bowling — a guide not only" to himself as captain but also to the selector for future reference.

Wellington players not available for the match against Country, to be played at the Basin Reserve next Wednesday and Thursday, included D. S. Wilson, R. W. Coupland, J. R. Lamason, J. Ashenden, W. Bain, E. W. Tindill, and E. G. McLeod. The lastnamed goes to flood areas of the Hawke's Bay-East Coast district each week and comes back to Wellington !or his cricket on Saturday.
