EQUALITY FOR WOMEN
STRUGGLE IN LEGAL WORLD
The war of a woman barrister, Miss Chrystal Macmillan, against the legal, political, and social # injustices that hampered her fellow-women in every walk of life is to be put on record by a notable group of her friends. They are planning a memorial to Miss Macmillan for the part she played in women's enfranchisement. University and medical women and women writers are on the committee organising the memorial, which, it is hoped, will provide an annual prize for women lav/ students and further the work of four suffrage and social organisations with which she was identified. WELL-KNOWN COMMITTEE. Miss Frances Melville, a former mistress of Queen Margaret College at Glasgow University, is chairman of the committee, which includes Lady Barrett, the noted obstetric surgeon, Lady Balfour of Burleigh, and Miss Cicely Hamilton. A descendant of Sarah Siddons, the actress Dame Sarah Siddons Mair, the educationist, has joined in the appeal, together with other leaders of the women's movement, including Lady Astor, Mrs. Pethick-Lawrence, and Dr. Jane Walker.
Miss Chrystal Macmillan, always a striking platform figure, handsome, impressive, and convincing, might have become a great mathematician, if she had not preferred for more than 40 years to champion women's causes. A purely academic life, however, could never have satisfied this Scotswoman with the fighting spirit.
One of her ambitions was the removal of 4he barrier against women in the legal profession.
