FAR EAST RELIEF
1 =• APPEAL FOR ASSISTANCE
The Far East Relief Committee has received the following cable from Hong Kong:—
"The South China refugee problem is assuming alarmingly distressing proportions. Several hundreds of thousands are homeless and starving. We urgently request you to assist with finance, personnel, foodstuffs, and medical material. Appeal to the whole . country for assistance and remit."
Sir James Elliott, chairman of the Far East Relief Committee, states that a special meeting of the committee will be held next week for the purpose of discussing this cable and to decide what action will be taken by the committee in the matter of assistance.
The committee has, during the past twelve months, maintained four doctors in the Far East, medical equipment, and some twenty cases of linen and clothes have been supplied, and the sum of £2000 was remitted to the International Red Cross in China. At the present time two New Zealand doctors are in China. Dr. G. Maaka is stationed at Ichang and Dr. .T. A. Watson at Chengchow.
