RECREATIONAL CENTRE
CENTENARY PLAN
SUGGESTION FOR CITY
A suggestion that Wellington's Centennial memorial should take the form of a sports and recreational centre, with tepid baths as a central feature, was put forward by Mr. J. Phillipps at a recent meeting of the committee appointed to consider proposals for the erection of tepid swimming baths in the city.
The meeting was attended .by representatives of various sports and youth organisations.
It was suggested by the chairman, Mr. P. N. Rundle, that a deputation should wait on the Centennial memorial committee to place before that committee views on the suitability of tep«l baths as a suitable memorial. Mr. Phillipps considered that the scheme should embrace a recreational centre with tepid baths as a central part of the proposal. A suggestion was made that all sports bodies should be circularised with the object of forming, a federation of sports bodies. The meeting unanimously supported Mr. Phillipps's proposal.
A suggestion by Mr. A. Leigh Hunt that plans should be prepared for publication in local newspapers, showing details of provision given to the various sports bodies under the proposal, was also approved. Various men with experience in town planning are to be interviewed with a view to securing their co-operation in the preparation of such plans.
A sub-committee, comprising Messrs. Phillipps and T. G. Queree, was appointed to arrange for the preparation of illustrated plans for publication. Mr. Phillipps was authorised to advise the Centennial committee of the views of the committee on the suitability of such a recreational centre.
