EASTBOURNE FOOTPATHS
" The Eastbourne Ratepayers' Association has been pressing for a definite statement about/the programme the council would carry out in regard to footpaths, said the secretary of the. association (Mr. F. C! Ay son,) today >
Mr. Ayson said that a .■, programme for improving the footpaths in the borough was the most pressing need at present. People were walking, on the bitumen on the main road, because of the condition of'the footpaths. The Mayor (Mr. E. W. Wise) had admitted at the annual meeting of the association" that something would be done when the council completed the seawall and this view was confirmed in a letter from the Town Clerk received after the last meeting of the council.
Mr. Ayson said he noticed this morning that a start had been made in ex■tending ; the wall from the vicinity of Makaro Street. The association took the view that this proposed extension of the wall was not necessary to prevent erosion or to protect properties from drifting sand, although it might have an ornamental value. Also, the council had spent some time in constructing new grass tennis courts. The association considered that before these courts were constructed or the seawall extended the council should go ahead with improving the footpaths.
