WESTERN PUSH

JAPANESE CHECKED

FIGHTING AT CANTON

(Received November 23, 2.25 p.m.)

CHUNGKING, November. 22

The Chinese Foreign Ministry claims that Japanese have withdrawn south of Yuchow with heavy losses and that their western push has been checked.

It is reported that 30,000 Japanese from Amoy are reinforcing Canton, where the Chinese are strongly fighting back. The Chinese stubbornly defended Shansi. It is estimated that 5000 Japanese have been killed and 10,000 wounded in the past fortnight.
