INTOXICATION CASES

COUNSEL'S CRITICISM

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, November 21. Strong .criticism of the procedure adopted when a person who is suspected of being intoxicated while in charge of a car is brought to a police station to be examined, was expressed by Mr. C. J. L. White in the Police Court when a young man pleaded not guilty to such a charge. It was stated that the defendant was arrested by traffic inspectors at 1 p.m., I and ten minutes later was examined by Dr. Evans (acting-police surgeon), who certified that he was intoxicated and not fit to be driving. The defendant then asked for his own doctor, who was not immediately available, but who arrived at 9.10 p.m., and then testified "That he was not impaired in any way at that time by indulgence in alcohol." Mr. White said that what he described as a most unsatisfactory state of affairs could be remedied with the institution of a panel of doctors willing to undertake this work, and if the police doctor were entitled to examine a man only in the presence of another i doctor representing him.
