FAST FLYING
214 M.P.H. AVERAGE
ELECTRA FROM DUNEDIN
Union Airways' new Electra airliner Kaka flew fast from Dunedin to Wellington this morning, averaging 214 m.p.h., setting the previous best time well in the background. Leaving Dunedin with eight passengers and with Commander G. R. White and Co-pilot E. M. Walker at the controls, the Kaka reached the hangar at Christchurch, 202 miles, in 57 minutes, or 212 m.p.h. The actual ground speed, from the moment of take-off to the touch-down, was 224 m.p.h. The 194 miles from Christchurch to Kongotai were covered in the dead hour, with nine passengers. The full time from Dunedin to Kongotai was 117 minutes and the actual time in the air (omitting taxiing) was 111 minutes, giving an average of 214 m.p.h. for 396 miles. The Electra was not hurrying, but at 8000 ft there was a fine tail wind of team 65 to 75 m.p.h.
