GAINS TO CANADA

LOWER COST OF LIVING

OTTAWA, November 18

It is considered that the Canadian public will benefit from the new agreement in a lowered cost of living and cattlemen, fishermen, and timbermen from an extension of their markets.

The sacrifice of the whole British preference on Canadian wheat and one-third of the preference on apples and pears will not. it is contended, prove damaging. Wheat growers have been assured of a fixed price of 80 cents a bushel by the Government, and apple growers retain a substantial, if reduced, margin. What timber growers lose in the British market they will regain in the American.

The treaty will probably prove most popular with Canadian manufacturers of iron, steel, and textile products.
