RESULT OF DRINK
ASSAULTS COMMITTED
Stating that he was unable to recollect any of the circumstances surrounding the charges, Robert Redvers Corbett,a railway fitter, aged 38, appeared before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today charged with drunkenness,- assaulting two Post and Telegraph Department messenger boys, and wilfully damaging a motorcar to the value of £5 15s.
Sub-Inspector D. A. McLean said that the defendant accosted the in Dixon Street, and asked for a cigarette. On being refused, he first threatened them with closed fists, and then struck them. He then went to Herbert Street, where he put his foot through both headlamps of a parked car. Four witnesses were called by the police.
The defendant admitted that he had had far more liquor than he could carry.
On each of the assault charges, he was fined £2, in default seven days' imprisonment. He was convicted on the charge involving the car, and ordered to pay the damage, and was convicted and* discharged on the drunkenness count.
Defendant: Is there any chance of having my name suppressed, your Worship? The Magistrate: No; certainly not.
