Lord Zetland, in the House of Lords> gave the, following defence details:—

Anti-aircraft guns were being delivered three times as fast.as six months ago and searchlights at four times the previous rate, and more than twice as many mountings for 3.7 and larger anti-aircraft guns were turned out in the four weeks succeeding September 26 as in the preceding four weeks. The air defence personnel on October 1 was 2027 officers and 43,223 other ranks, compared with 663 officers and 8798 other ranks two years ago. One million feet, of trenches nad been dug and 30,000,000 gas masks distributed during the crisis.
