GLASS WORKS IDLE
EMPLOYEES STRIKE
DELAY IN AWARD PROCEED-
INGS
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, This Day.
One hundred and fifty members of the Auckland Glass Workers' Union struck this morning as a protest against being unable to obtain a fixture for' the hearing of their award claims in ths Arbitration Court. The men had been advised by the Court that they could not secure a fixture for six months. The workers on strike are mostly employees of the Australian Glass Manufacturers Co., Ltd., Penrose. The decision to remain away from work was made at a stopwork meeting this morning. Another meeting will be held tomorrow morning. The union decided meanwhile to leave the firemen and mixers at their posts until a further course of action is decided upon. The award expired on October 21, and a dispute was immediately brought before a Conciliation Commissioner. Settlement was reached on several points, but it was decided to refer the question of. wages to the Arbitration Court. It is stated that when the union applied for a hearing the officials were advised that the Court could not fix a hearing ipr six months.
The manager of the Penrose works, Mr. W. Kearns, said today that the trouble had come at a most unfortunate time. Trade was more or less seasonal, and big orders for Christmas were in hand.
