BOND OF EMPIRE

DUKE'S APPOINTMENT

JOY IN AUSTRALIA

MR. LYONS'S COMMENT

(By Telegraph—Pres3 Assn.—Copyright.)

| SYDNEY, October 26. The news of the Duke of Kent's appointment. as Governor-General of Australia has created great surprise and jubilation in all parts of the Commonwealth. It is understood that the Duke's term as Governor-General will be approximately two years.

The Duke's appointment was officially announced today by the Prime Minister (Mr. J. A. Lyons), who said that the presence in Australia of the Duke and Duchess would serve as ah additional bond, if such were needed, between the people of the Commonwealth and Great Britain. * Mr. Lyons added that it was a great privilege to make the announcement. "This mark of their Majesties' interest in the Commonwealth is extremely gratifying," he said. "We welcome the opportunity of making their Highnesses familiar with our country and our ways, and will do our utmost to make their sojourn a period of great happiness and interest." Mr. Lyons paid a tribute to the splendid service given by Lord Gowrie, the present Governor-

General, who had asked to retire as from November, 1939, whereupon the Duke of Kent will assume office.
