SURPLUS PRODUCE

SUPPORT FOR AMERICAN PLAN

WASHINGTON, October 25,

The Government has received earlysupport for its surplus produce plan, for which it has allocated 10,000,000 dollars.

The "citrus industry has accepted a Government offer to buy 3,000,000 cases of high-quality oranges at the market price for resale at low rates to the needy on condition that the industry withdraws 3,000,000 cases of lowquality oranges from the market. Grapefruit growers are considering a similar deal.

The Secretary of Agriculture, Mr. H. A. Wallace, contends that the plan is preferable to export subsidies. "Some want to sell to foreigners the surplus produce cheaply," he commented. "Is it, not better to give our own people the benefit of bargain prices?"
