CORRESPONDENCE

STREET CROSSINGS

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —For some time past it has occurred to me that" something is naturally lacking in the eyes of the City Council in respect to the need of permanent markings for pedestrian crossings.

Seeing these from my point of view, I see a vast amount of paint and labour used for this purpose, only to be worn off by the necessary traffic, and subsequently put on again. What a waste! This method goes on year after year, and as far as I can see the council does not attempt to form any idea of permanence. If the officers of this department require any suggestions of a permanent nature, I could supply them with more than one, but seeing that they employ artisans who are educated to the needs of council work there is no necessity for me to enumerate them here. I would, however, remind the council that a permanent job is cheaper than a temporary one. —I am, etc., SMITH'S CORNER.
