MAORI APPEAL FAILS
Hie Court of Appeal has unanimous-ly-dismissed the appeal of Hoani Te Heuheu Tukino,. chief. of the Ngatituwharetoa, against the judgment of Mr. Justice Smith in favour of the Aotea District Maori Land Board. Negligence and breach of duty in dealing with land between Taumarunui" and Lake Taupo were alleged against the board; but the Court of Appeal, consisting of the . Chief Justice (Sir Michael Myers)1, Mr. Justice Callan, and Mr. Justice Northcroft, held that the judgment of the Court below was right. ,„ * ■ ■ v Mr. M. H. Hampson (Rotorua) conducted the case for the appellant, and Mr. W. A. Izard (Wanganui) appeared for the board. • ;
The "Mildred Newcombe Memorial Fund" was opened at Wanganui last week, states "The Post's" representative. The fund will be devoted to a special portion of the proposed additions at the Stewart Karitane Home, an institution that Miss Newcombe took a -grea*-interest in. Miss Newcombe was orte of the city's best-known personalities, who did a great work among returned men, and- others needing assistance.
