WINTER CUP TOURNAMENT
GOOD GOLF UNDER DIFFICULTIES
Difficult conditions hampered competitors in the annual "Labour Day" Winter Cup golf tournament at the Hutt Club's course ori Saturday and yesterday. In the qualifying rounds on Saturday the conditions were particularly difficult, with a high wind in the morning increasing to great force in the early afternoon and later giving way to a steady downpour which drenched a number' of the players.
In such circumstances the qualifying scores for the most part were high, and the total of 166 by the sixteenth competitor in the match-play competition was three or four strokes more than usual for the tournament. Nevertheless, for such conditions, some really fine golf was played. H. A. Black's two rounds of 75 and 77 represented exceptionally good golf and I. A. Ewen's second round of 75, made in continual rain, was as fine a performance as he has achieved this season.
The sixteen qualifiers in the match play were:—H. A. Black. 75. 77—152; I. A. Ewen, 78, 75—153; W. B. Reilly, 79. 77—156; R. G. Holland, 79, 80— 159; DH. Graham, 82, 79—161: C. E. Hollis, 79. 82-161; P. G. Whitcombe, 82, 80—162; J. B. Graham. 85, 77—162; D. M. Elliott. 78, 85—163; W. G. Fisher, 78, 86—164; W. J. Oliver. 84, 80—164; j; F. Pym, 83. 81—164; H. K. Adamson. 81, 83—164; R. D. Chandler. 84, 81—165: L. B. Quinn, 82, 83—165; and J. E. Nicolaus, 84. 82—166.
Black has always been partial to the iournament. Last year he was runnerup to R. G. Holland, and on Saturday he demonstrated by his two fine rounds that he would be one of the difficult players of the field. His control was as precise as ever; and though occasionally he was fortunate in approaches to the green, most of the time he obtained his figures by good golf. In the morning, particularly, he deserved neither more nor less than his 75.
Ewen did not start until about 1 o'clock and it was after 5.30 when he had finishd his two rounds. The rain caught him at the end of his first round, and fell throughout the secona. Towards the end it was particularly heavy. Considering that the freedom of his swing was impeded by rubbers, his score represented really fine golfing.
W. B. Reilly. Shandon. continued to impress as one of Wellington's finest by his performance. His 77 in the afternoon would have been improved but for a 7 at the fourth, where his drive landed in gorse. He had started the round, 352, against par of 453, and even after the seven he continued to play par golf. At the eighth, his tee shot finished in long grass. He played a courageous wood a distance of 160 yards or so to within ten yards of the green. " ■ . Holland was good without being quite at his best and both Graham and Hollis had patches of indifferent play. Whitcbmbe was steady and J. B. Graham played very fine seconds to score an afternoon round eight strokes below his morning effort. Fisher found the going hard in the afternoon to slip eight strokes and Elliott was also caught by the rain. The course was in good order, though towards the end of the day there was casual water in the bunkers and on the greens. There was one case of a putt going into the hole and out again, because of flooding water. . Results of match play in the Winter Cup yesterday were: — First Round. BJack (Miramar) beat Elliott (Shandon), 2 and 1. _ Oliver (Waiwetu) beat D. H. Gra- , hem (Wellington), 2 and 1, J. B. (Wellington) beat Chandler (Hutt), 4 and .3. Pym (Hutt) beat Reilly (Shandon), at the nineteenth. - Holland (Waiwetu) beat Fisher (Hutt), 4 and 2. Whitcombe, (Wellington) beat Nicolaus (Shandon), 6 and 4. Quinn (Waiwetu) beat Hollis (Shandon), at the nineteenth. Eweh (Hutt) beat Adamson (Hutt), 2 up. Second Round. Black beat Oliver, 5 and 4. Graham beat Pym, 2 and 1. Holland beat Whitcombe, 3 and 2. Ewen beat Quinn, 2 and 1. Black continued to show good form in the match play; his defeat of Elliott was notable, for Elliott had been playing steadily. In the afternoon, his defeat of Oliver was achieved by sound play with all his clubs. Ewen continued to shine as one of the threats of the tournament by defeating Adamson and Quinn. Quinn fought-well to hold" Ewen to 1 up at the turn and he lacked the edge xo improve his scores at later holes. He . found himself struggling for halves with Ewen on the inside most of the time. J. F. Pym scored a fine win in defeating Reilly at the nineteenth. A bad mistake in the bunker at the fourteenth proved costly for Reilly, for he took 6 to hole out after being pin high in 2. At the nineteenth, too, he underclubbed off the tee with an iron, owing to the wind. Pym played a masterly . spoon shot to the mouth of the green. J. B. Graham continued to improve. His defeat of Chandler on Chandler's home course was a good effort, and in the second round he downed Pym, who was playing steadily. ; FLIGHT COMPETITIONS. Group I.—First round: -G.R.
