CHINESE IN CAMP
PUBLIC WORKS EMPLOYEES
(Special to the "Evening Post.")
NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day
What is believed to be something unique in public works camps can be found in the Inglewo.od-Kaimiro district, fourteen miles from New Plymouth, where 29 tents, including two bathrooms and one wireless tent, have been erected for twelve Chinese and about nine whites. All the Chinese ai-e from Wellington and have been in camp for the past three months.
Their work, along with those of the other employees, is mainly to clean out creeks and drains on, settlers' farms in the district. All the Chinese, according to one of them, are being paid £4 a week, but when working in water while cleaning out drains they receive £4 5s a week. "
"Cars are like women," remarked Mr. Justice Blair, discussing skidding in the Supreme Court, Hamilton. There was a theory among motorists that if a skid started one should drive into it. "Like women," added his Honour, "cars. i,f they want to have their own way, will have it."
