CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIPS
RAIN SPOILS THE OPENING
PLAY CONSIDERABLY CURTAILED
The beginning of a season which holds out a prospect oi much keen and bright club cricket was ruined by rain on Saturday afternoon. The day did not promise well for the start of championship play, but a chance was taken when the weather showed signs of improving. Unfortunately that chance did not work out at all well, and eventually, after a battle with-the elements, the players ened enough. In the Wellington Cricket Association's senior grade little headway was made, none of the four teams which look strike reaching the 100 mark in the period before play was abandoned for the da) 7. - Midland collected 93 runs against Wellington at the Basin Reserve, but lost five wickets in the process. At Ivilbirnie University had reached 77 for four against the home team when stumps were drawn, and at the Hutt Recreation Ground Wellington College Olcl Boys did well to make 73 for two against Hutt. Not a -wicket fell at Karori, where the home team's openers against Institute Old Boys put on 53 under heavy conditions. Bowlers and fieldsmen were handicapped in all matches, and there was not much pleasure for the batsmen. The lucky ones on Saturday were those who did not have to leave the shelter of the pavilions.
