?■% PATEA WEDDING

St. George's Church, Patea, was the scene of a wedding of interest recently, when Alice, eldest daughter of 1 Mr. and Mrs. A. J. GEbbs, of Alton 1 (both known throughout the Dominion :as champion croquet players), and granddaughter of the. late Mr. James :■ Gibbs, a pioneer settler of Alton, was ■ married to Mr. E. A. Bowen, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Bowen, of Ham-| ilton. The bridal gown was of brocaded matt-surfaced «atm, the trained ! skirt being inset with, panels of georgette. The sleeves :were long, and the neck-line heart shaped, and the embroidered veil was held by a diamante and orange blossom halo, and she carried a plumed fan centred bouquet of gardenia aud lily of the valley. Misses Ivy, Elsie, and Betty Gibbs. sisters of the bpride, attended. 1 her .All were, frocked alike in white Swiss organdie, hand embroidered in blue and gold, and pale blue taffeta coats, and haloes and boutquets were in tones of blue and gold. Two little maids were fspeked in ivwry georgette, with ivory and silver accessories. Mr. Seddon Edwards, Patea, was best man, and Messrs. J. T. Gibbs and L. Jeffery groomsmen. The Rev. W. H. Walton was the officiating clergyman. Afterwards nearly 200 guests were entertained by Mr. and Mrs. Gibbs at the Alton Hall, which .was decorated with spring flowers.Women's Institutes. " . There was a large attendance at the half-yearly meeting of members of the Wanganui District Federation of Women's Institutes on Thursday at Makirikiri, when Mrs. H. Paterson, Pahiatua, was the principal speaker. At the luncheon adjournment, many availed themselves of Mrs. Farley's invitation to visit her lovely garden. One new Maori Institute lias been added to the federation during the year. Among many interesting discussions, one relating to the amoamt that each institute could devote to outside calls was of particular interest. Crowning of the Queen. There was a colourful ceremony at the Wanganui Opera House on Wednesday evening, when the final of the Wanganui Garrison Band's effort to raise £1000 for new instruments and uniforms, was concluded by the "Crowning of the Queen/ The "queen" was the "musical" nominee, Miss Merle Spurdle, and the "princesses" were Misses Jean Kellick (country), L. Bailey (Maori), and J. Glasgow (sports). In combination with the ceremony was a firms' choir contest, won by Woolworths, and the Wanganui Woollen Mills and Wanganui City Council tied for second place. A number of delightful items were on the programme, including items by the Putiki Maori Party. Personals. Mrs. Williams, Waipawa, is the guest of Mrs. H. Stranchon, Waverley. Mrs. J. Shanks has been appointed the Wanganui Federation representative on the Dominion Council of Women's Institutes. Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Moore have returned to Marton from Auckland. Miss Olive Russell is on a motoring holiday in the Wairarapa. Mrs. Wybourne, Waverley, is visiting Mrs H. Andrews in Wellington. Mrs J. C. Wickham, Dominion president of the Women's Division of the Farmer's Union, has been visiting Hawera and Waverley this week. Mr and Mrs. J. Bull,' Hunterville, and Mr. and Mrs. G. Clarke are visiting Wellington. Mr and Mrs. Ramsbottom have returned to Patea after a long holiday in Europe. . _ Dr. and Mrs. P. V. Grane, Waverley, are visiting Wellington. Misses June Strouts, and S. Ross are in Hawera for the golf tournament. Mrs. J. H. Bumet, is spending a holiday in Wellington, had instituted a movement which would result in the establishment of their own rooms in Karori. The stalls were splendidly stocked with Christmas gifts, children's clothing, cakes, sweets, and produce, and the result will mean a substantial addition to the fund.* The committee expressed special thanks to the many tradespeople of Karori, and all friends who generously helped towards the | wonderful success achieved.
