FORM REGAINED
NIGHTDRESS MORE SOLID
Night Dress confirmed his recent return to form comparable with what he promised as a juvenile by winning the Heretaunga Handicap after a solid performance all the way. He was all out at the finish to ward off Auto Sweep's claim, but he never actually appeared in any danger of defeat. Night Dress was first to move from an inner marble, but several horses dashed past him early, and along the back he had to shift out on the course. In going after the leaders on the turn he traversed extra ground, but in the straight he soon cut down Son and Heir, and he then held all challengers at bay. This was Night Dress's third win in line, after having been a complete failure as a three-year-old last season and early this term. He is a brown gelding by Nightmarch from the Winning Hit—Equipment mare Ball Dress, a winner of the Douro Cup, and he was secured last January from the late Sir Charles Clifford for 150 guineas by Messrs. A. S. Elworthy and D. Gould» for whom he has only lately become a profitable investment. Auto Sweep has gone his best races on the Trentham track, where he has been three times placed at good prices. He ran one of his best races on Saturday, moving right round the field to follow Son and Heir and Night Dress into the straight, and he came home resolutely. It is remarkable that a horse who has occasionally shown such form should still be a maiden. . , Earl Colossus was another to finish strongly and he was a good third after having been well back till the straight. Rustem was right up fourth and running on, but Son and Heir tired into fifth. The others were down the course, headed by the first day's winner Accomplice, and by Flying Acre, each of whom had been well placed till rounding the straight. Erlick ran poorly again, but1 Royal I Tinge was in front for nearly a i mile.
