HOW HOLIDAY IS BEING SPENT

Labour Day dawned with the end of a chill southerly, but'though the sky was overcast most of the day. the rain ended by the time most people were setting but, and the afternoon improved on the morning. The weather changed plans for a number of people. It was not a day for the beaches, but it was invigorating enough to suit trampersi parties of whom were out in the Orongorongos, arid on longer trip 3 over the weekend. The roads were filled with traffic, and though there were ho long excursions on the trains, the race traffic was very heavy.

The final day of the Wellington Racing Club's. Meeting at Trentham was the goal of many. No doubt the races attracted a number of people whose former arrangements were spoilt. There were indications of a very largo crowd shortly after midday.

The rain soaked bowling greens, and the Lyall Bay tourney was put off, though Seatoun held a tournament. Thorndon and Wellington greens, as were many others, were closed.

Sports at Newtown Park, where. a 26-mile marathon race is being held, attracted a large number. The annual sports at St. Patrick's College were held today.

The Evans Bay Yacht Club's season was opened with the usual regatta. There were good entries, and the weather was ideal, though cold.

The Hutt Valley Lawn Tennis Association held its annual Yankee tournament. -

Golfers entered upon the semi-finals of the Hutt Winter Cup tournament, and minor tournaments or play were the rule on most other links.

Friendly matches were played by the Mercantile Cricket League.

The Waterloo School's gala was held at Lower Hutt.

The Band. and Musical Festival of the Salvation Army, which is being attended by many visiting bandsmen, commenced with a rally at the Basin Reserve this morning, and drew • number of people this afternoon.
