LEARNERS' SIGNS

HUTT COUNTY APPROVES

Comment upon the suggestion to issue a special | learner's plate to new motor-car drivers was made at a meeting of the Hutt County Council yesterday afternoon. The chairman, Councillor S. Blackley, said he did not consider the idea a good one because if a motorist had something to indicate he was not capable of driving a car, he should not be on the road.

"A man cannot learn to drive a car in a garage," commented Councillor J. B. Yaldwyn, "he must get his experience on the road. It is better to give a driver a qualification as a learner so that people can give him consideration. There are too many inexperienced 4rivers on the roads. This suggestion, which had been adopted in England, has merit as it gives protection to the man who is driving as a learner. If he shows an "L" sign, other drivers can give him a wide berth and greater confidence is given the learner when he knows that other drivers will do'this."

Councillor R. L. Button thought that greater danger might exist through a learner being given greater liberty.

Councillor Yaldwyn: A,• learner would be more careful as he would realise he was only a probationer. It should be a greater responsibility on experienced drivers to give learners liberty. The council agreed with the suggestion, and information stating this is to be forwarded to the Commissioner of Transport.
