SECOND-HAND TIMBER
USED FOR BUILDING
COUNTY COUNCIL WARNING
Information that second-hand timber was being used in the construction of dwellings in the Hutt County was received at a meeting of the Hutt County Council yesterday afternoon, when the building inspector's report was presented. The report stated that building activity was again increasing for the summer season, particularly at weekend resorts. A .fair amount of demolition work was being carried on in the city, and a percentage of timber from these buildings is finding its; way into the county. While no fault could be found with this timber; if sound, some of it was unsound. The chairman, Councillor S. Blackley, said it was a breach of the bylaws for any person to use secondhand timber without haying it passed, and. he wished prospective builders to know that.
Councillor F. W. Vickerman said it was an impossibility for the building inspector to. see all buildings in the course of his duties. Something should be done to see that the right studs and timber were used. The council did not want to make itself an irritating body as long as the bylaws were carried out, but they were being evaded because there was too much work for the inspector. "The position at present is a farce, and something H§s to be done to remedy it," he said. The overseer, Mr. E. Campbell, thought the position called for more supervision
It was decided to prosecute any further offenders, and that arrangements should be made to obtain an additional building inspector.
