Town Planning Legislation.
"It was hoped that the Town Planning Act would have been amended during the course of last Parliament and brought more into conformity with present-day requirements of local governing bodies and of the orderly development of city and rural lands," says the annual report of the Town Planning Institute of New Zealand. "It is encouraging to note the increased attention being shown by local governing bodies to the principles of town planning. As taxpayers and ratepayers come to realise the serious and continuous economic waste that results from the failure of town and county councils to plan ahead, pressure of public opinion will give increased support to local governing bodies in the institution of far-sighted plans for the development of city and rural areas." When Synod Sings.
An unusual question of procedure which fell to the lot of the Christchurch Synod to decide on Thursday concerned itself with whether or not the Doxology, which Synod was to sing, should be sung in committee, states the "Press." The Doxology closed a long discussion, in committee, on the need for a Christian Witness campaign. When Synod was about to sing, the president, Bishop West-Wat-son, asked: "What is the feeling of Synod? Should we sing in committee or out of it?" The smile with which he asked for a ruling was echoed by peals of laughter, and the question was not actually put. So that, if they wished, the reporters could have reported the Doxology. '■
Campers and Sandflies.
How can campers avoid the nuisance of sandflies in New Zealand? This was briefly discussed by the council of the Automobile Association (Canterbury), when Mr. G. S. Morris moved that the authorities at the Cawthron Institute should be asked if they could suggest any method of minimising or eliminating the sandfly nuisance, states the "Press." Mr. Morris claimed that the attractions of camping places were lessened by the presence of sandflies. Citronella, lettuce water, and kerosene were among the remedies suggested by members of the council before it was. agreed to adopt Mr. Morris's proposal.
