GOOD SUMMER START
A GENERAL CLEAN-UP
! Now that warm weather has come it is an excellent idea to go over the car with the object of getting rid of bad developments and neglect of the winter months in preparation for the summer touring season. \ If a winter grade oil has been in use it should be drained away and a summer grade substituted. Do the draining after or during a run v/hile the engine and oil are hot. If the old oil is much contaminated a flushing oil should be used before the new lubricant is poured in. Run the engine for five minutes or so before draining the flushing oil off.
The gear-box and rear axle should both be drained and refilled with fresh lubricant. Make personally sure that this operation is properly performed. A careless boy can drain off these.parts and return the car to the road without proper refilling, and that may result in serious trouble. Better trouble him than he trouble you. This is properly a service job; service stations^ and garages carry the proper gear for handling the heavy lubricants used.
Water and mud have probably worked into the various bearings about
the frame, steering gear, and springs. The resultant grit must be got rid of. Clean up all the parts and liberally supply them with fresh lubricant, forcing out all the old. The front wheels should be jacked up to relieve the steering pivots of weight and so allow the wheels to be swung from side to side and the lubricant worked into every part.
The car should go on a hoist or over a well and be thoroughly cleaned underneath, giving attention to all retaining bolts, spring clamps, steering block, etc., to ensure that everything is tight, and shipshape. A judicious use of lubricant ' will eliminate all squeaking as between body and chassis. Many garages use a misty oil spray which penetrates every nook and cranny with effect. *
