LABOUR DAY SPORTS
AT NEWTOWN PARK
SOME OF THE COMPETITORS
As in past years, one of the chief attractions for people who do not go out of town on Labour Day will be the sports meeting, and this is to be held at Newtown Park on Monday, commencing in the morning and continuing in the afternoon, when the main athletic and cycling events will be conducted. An additional attraction at this year's gathering will be the sitart and finish of the Wellington provinicial marathon championship over the full distance of 26 miles 385 yards.
When the list of entries was seen during the week, 10 runners had entered for the marathon, most of them being- competitors who took part in the miles race conducted at Trentham recently by the Olympic Harrier Club. Among them were R. D. McGregor, who finished second, and A. L. Stevens, who was third in the 20 miles event. Others who have entered are A. B. McCallum, P. B. Silver, D. Sinclair, G. B. Appleby, F. B. Rowley, W. Owens, R. Jones, and C. McCalman. The marathon is to start at 1.30 p.m.
The track programme includes several cycle races and these have drawn good entries. Among those who will be taking part are R. Ulmer, one of New ' Zealand's British Empire Games representatives, T. Roe, J. Wilson, R. Loader, E. J. Langley (Nelson), F. Blackett (Levin), A. Thomas (Motueka), Len Sowerby, and Les. Sowerby.
Mrs. V. Rollerson, of Palnxerston North, who was one of the outstand-
ing competitors at a number of meetings in Wellington last season, is an entrant for the women's 75 yards and 100 yards events. Among others who will be taking part in these races will be Misses A. Walker. M. Molloy, and J. McGrath.
Of the other events, one which promises to provide a good contest is the 880 yards. The back-markers in this will probably be R. L. S. Black (University), A. Robinson (Kiwi), and A. Bourgeois (Wellington). Bourgeois has also entered for the three miles, and in this, too, he is likely to be on the scratch mark, probably with T. Bartlett (Scottish Harriers).
Apart from the athletic and cycling races, there are many other events which go towards completing a good holiday programme.
The ■ secretary of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, Mr. H. N. Burns, has announced that a letter has been received from Vivian MeGralh, the Australian tennis player, stating that arrangements in New South Wales would prevent him from accepting the invitation of the N.Z.L.T.A. to compete in this season's New Zealand championships.
