LAWN TENNIS

REFEREES'QUALIFICATIONS

JUNIOR COACHING

Discussion took place at last night's meeting of the management committee of the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association on a suggestion, received from the Wellington Umpires' Association, that the referee appointed for tournaments should be a qualified member of the Umpires' Association. Mr. A. C. W. Mantell-Harding said he was wholeheartedly in favour of the idea. The point was raised that if they agreed to the proposal every member of the committee would have to pass the umpires' examination this year.

The chairman (Mr. A. M. Pinkerton) agreed with this but said he hoped that all members would do this in any case. He thought, however, that the scope was too limited at present, as only twp members of the committee had passed the examination. The referee need not be a member of the executive as long as he was a qualified umpire. Mr. R. P. Cooper remarked that they might not be able to appoint a referee who had passed the examination for the Christmas tournament.

It was decided to reply that the proposal would receive favourable consideration when appointments of referees were being made, but that under the present conditions the Tennis Association could not see its way clear to make such a decision.

It was reported that the arrangements for the inter-club competition, which starts next Saturday, had been completed. While none of the teams could be persuaded to play on Sunday none had been left out of the contest There are about four more entries than last year.

Referring to the junior coaching scheme Mr. W. W. Stirling said that he had written to the people who had coached last year, but the replies were slow in coming in. Any club which did not appoint a member as a coach would be left out of the scheme and would lose the opportunity of helping its. junior players. Coaching will start on November 30. -~ ••
