INTEREST IN WORK
BIBLE SOCIETY BRANCHES
A meeting of interested friends of the British and Foreign Bible Society was held recently in St. James's Presbyterian Church, Wellington South, the special objective of the meeting being to re-establish the work in the district. Miss Fawcett, district organiser, explained that the greater part of the work of collecting had been undertaken by Sister Maud. She had been untiring in her service for the Bible Society, but was now confining herself to the business areas.
The Rev. A. G. Gardiner occupied the chair and led the meeting in Bible reading and prayer.
Miss Fawcett spoke at length on the work of the Bible Society. She stated that at the annual meeting, which was .held recently in London, it was reported that some portion of the Scriptures had now been circulated in 1013 different language, the British and Foreign Bible Society being responsible for 723 translations. The work of translating was dealt with and •examples of the sacrifice and toil involved in connection with it were stressed. >
The election, of officers resulted as follows:—President, the Rev. A. G. Gardiner; vice-presidents, local ministers; secretary, Miss Tendall; collectors, Mesdames Harris, Powall, Woods, Dockery, Dearnley, Ramsden, Misses Chappie and Tendall.
Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs. A. Lewis ,to whom special thanks were expressed.
An interesting and satisfactory result of'the meeting was the ready response to the work of collecting by Mrs. Lewis's senior Bible Class members.
