AMELANCHIER CANADENSIS

Every season I am struck with thel very great beauty of this tree. It is now in its full bloom, being covered with light sprays of snow-white blossoms on the base twigs. This tree is sometimes known as the Snowy mespolis. The foliage, which appears after the blossom, is small and oval, and colours brilliantly in the autumn, while berries of a vivid red usually form freely. To those who do not care for white flowers the autumn foliage and berries more than compensate for the colour of the flowers. The trees grow to a height of from 15 feet to 30 feet and are suitable for small gardens, but should be planted, when possible, in a sheltered position, otherwise the blossom and foliage get! blemished in the early stages. * Any ordinary garden soil suits these trees and, beyond thinning out superfluous growths, no pruning is necessary.
