HOARDING SEATS

Opposition sustained

DEPUTATION TO COUNCIL

The opposition of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce to the advertising seats erected in Wellington was revived when the chamber met last night. It was agreed that the council should be asked to receive a deputation on the matter.

A letter from the Town Clerk stated that the chamber's views had been noted by the council, which had directed him to inform the chamber "that the council had the city's welfare in view" The letter sent to the council, the secretary (Mr. E. M. Bardsley) said, had deprecated the erection of the seats and suggested their withdrawal. Mr M G C McCaul suggested that a deputation should wait on the council and place the views of the chamber before it. The Beautifying Society would probably co-operate with the chamber, he said. This course was approved.

A second hoarding seat has been placed on the safety zone in front of the Railway Station, further reducing the amount of standing room during busy times. The back-to-the-street placing is being followed in other seats recently placed, as at Courtenay Place and Johnston Street.
