CZECH REFUGEES
PLACE IN NEW ZEALAND
(Received October 19, 2.50 p.m.)
LONDON, October 18. The "Daily Herald" quotes"the High Commissioner for New^ Zealand, Mr, W. J. Jordan, as saying that "New Zee* land is prepared to admit as many Czech refugees as possible to the limit of our requirements.", .
A news agency states that the British Government has acquainted the Dominions with the nature of the problem, but has not made' specific. "sug? gestions. There are hopes that the Do- ; minions may be persuaded to take a j few hundred. The problem is not being tackled at present in terms of the J thousands it is expected Britain will take.
"SIMPLY NONSENSE"
"I would like to know some more about it," said the Prime. Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) when the above cable was referred to him. "To say that we will admit them without limit is simply nonsense, and I can hardly imagine Mr. Jordan saying anything like that. Our first duty is to the British people, and after that*w» will naturally do what wo can fofl the others.*
