BRITISH TROOPS ORDERED TO THE BORDER

By Telegraph—l'russ Association —Copyright

(Received October 13, 1.15 p.m.)

LONDON, October 12.

A new phase of the Sino-Japanese war opened when a powerful Japanese South China expedition, estimated at between 30,000 and 35,000 troops, landed in Bias Bay, northeast of Hong Kong. One report says that 50.000 men landed, princi-

pally at Hachung, from 70 transports which were covered by at least 50 naval craft. They met little resistance, because the swampy area is unsuitable for fortifications and the defenders would have been faced not only by the invaders but by concentrated fire from Japanese warships. The invader* pressed on towards Waichow. 20 miles inland, where Chinese troops have rallied at the last of the outer lines protecting the great port of Canton. The special correspondent of the "Daily Mail," after a flight over Bias Bay at dawn, reported that the surface of the beach was black .with moving figures taking part* in the Japanese landing." One hundred and twenty vessels, including. capital ships, aircraft carriers, destroyers, transports, and barges were disgorging soldiers. The invaders were barely thirty miles from the Hong Kong border. Hong Kong reports heavy fighting north of Bias Bay.
