COMING TALKS

Light will be thrown on the problems raised by the impact of white civilisation on black in a recorded talk at 2YA tonight, Thursday, by the Rev. B. T. Butcher, entitled "Cannibals and Culture." Mr. Butcher spent nearly 30 years in Papua as a missionary among cannibals, going alone into the midst of a tribe that practised cannibalism. He has very definite views about the future of such people.

Lord Lothian, secretary of the Rhodes Trust, is to speak at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon at midday tomorrow, on "International Relations," and his address, beginning about 1.20 p.m., will be broadcast by 2YA. This will be the only opportunity that New Zealanders will have of hearing Lord Lothian.

Another series of recorded talks by Professor Arnold Wall is to be released this week by the N.B.S. This series is entitled "The Meaning of Words," and Professor Wall will deal with the origin of well-known phrases and words which have a historical origin. We talk, for instance, about Mrs. Grundy. Very few people know the original of this symbol of social rectitude. There will be eight of

these talks, and the first will be heard from 3YA tomorrow, Friday.

The second two talks in 'the section "Crime and Punishment" of the "Whirligig of Time" series at 2YA will be given on Monday evening and the following Monday by. Mr. W. E. Leicester. These will, deal with the growth of the idea of responsibility for the criminal, and the speaker will discuss the jury system.
