RATE OF WAGES

INCREASES TO COME

There never was a time in the history of New Zealand when there was less unemployment than at present, said the Hon. R. Semple, Labour candidate for Wellington East, when speaking at Houghton Bay last night. Wages had never been higher either, he said, and the electors should not think that the end had come. If Labour was returned to office wages would increase as opportunity offered. Labour did not think that wages should remain stationary while the production of the country grew greater. The people of the nation increased the wealth of the country, Mr. Semple said, and they should receive an increased share of their creation. "And we will see that they get it," he added. "We will see that the people who really produce reap the benefit. The other fellows know it. That is why they are squealing. They don't want the producers to benefit by increased production. They want it all to themselves." About sixty attended the meeting, which was presided over by Mr. G. Churchill. At the conclusion of his address, Mr. Semple was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence and "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" was sung.
