14 LIVES LOST
CANADIAN FOREST FiRE
MOTHERS' HEROISM
(Received October 12, 12.30 p.m.)
PORT FRANCES (Ontario), Oct. 11.
Fourteen lives were claimed by a forest fire which swept across homesteads over an area fifty miles wide. The remains of two women and nine children were found by the side of a road. The mothers had heroically covered the infants with their bodies in a vain attempt to save them when they were caught by the flames after they had fled from their homes in an attempt to reach a lake.
