STATE RENTAL HOUSES

(To the Editor.}

Sir, —Without adopting a party attitude; we desire to acquaint the public with certain details concerning the State rental houses as observed' by the tenants actually occupying them. We speak for the Miramar area in particular, but our remarks apply in most respects to the other State rental houses throughout the Dominion. The rents are appreciably loWer than those payable in the case of most privatelyowned houses of a comparable standard. Regarding the construction of th? State houses we have the evidence of our own eyes and the considered statements of the tradesmen employed in building them that the material and workmanship demanded by tlie Housing Department were of superior quality. The interior fittings are Conveniently and artistically planned. The houses are comfortable, roomy, and a delight to live in. The grounds provide plenty of space for flower and vegetable gardens and for lawns, and the houses are sufficiently remote from each other to reap the full benefit from the sun. The Housing Department has supplied and planted, free of cost, hedges, and native shrubs arranged expertly with a view to beautifying the whole area.

The regulations concerning the care of these properties are reasonable and are only such as any private owner would impose on himself. Seventy-six tenants, representing 100 per cent, of those who were at home when we called, signed a letter to the UnderSecretary in Charge of Housing expressing their utmost appreciation of these homes and further stating their earnest hope that many other people may experience the type of home comfort that we now enjoy. It is to be emphasised that we, as an association, are strictly non-political; but we shall strenuously any misrepresentations of facts regarding the State rental houses. Reference to these homes as "slums," "places not fit for dogs," "birth-control barracks," and so on are, very much resented by thousands of occupants qt State houses throughout New Zealand. —We are, etc.,

L. A. C. WARNER, Chairman. D. RYAN, Hon. Sec. Miramar State Rental Householders* Association.
