WILL APPLETON'S RECORD OF CIVIC ACHIEVEMENT

Born in Alexandra, Central Otago, Mr. Appleton started his business career at the age of 13 as an office boy. About 32 years ago he came to Wellington as a cadet in. the Accountant's Branch of the Post and Telegraph Department. Passing the Senior Civil Service Examination and qualifying by examination as an Accountant, he entered commercial life four years later. Eventually he became the principal owner of one of the largest Advertising Agencies in the Dominion. Six years ago he retired from active business in order to devote practically his full time to public affairs. He is truly a man from the ranks. EARLY SUCCESS. Recognising the ability and enterprise of Mr. Appleton, other concerns sought his services, and to-day he is a director of several companies embracing industrial, manufacturing and financial enterprises in various parts of the Dominion. For the last six years he has served on the Wellington City Mortgage Adjust-, ment Commission. LOCAL BODY ACTIVITY. Early in Ms career Mr. Appleton took a keen interest in local politics, and about twenty-three years ago he was elected a member of the old Onslow Borough Council, which body subsequently amalgamated and became part of Greater Wellington. In this connection he was appointed a member of the City Council. He served six years on the Wellington Hospital Board, and for the past seven years has been a member of the City Council, now being in his fourth year as Chairman of the Works Committee. Mr. Appleton is a member of the Wellington City and Suburban Highways and Water Boards, represents the City Council as a Governor of the Wellington Technical College, and has just been elected Chairman of the Board. He is also a Director of the Wellington Centennial Exhibition Company Ltd., and was recently elected to the Wellington Harbour Board. SOCIAL WELFARE WORK. Will Appleton was one of the founders of the Trentham Scholarship Fnnd, and has since acted as trustee. He was also an enthusiastic worker for the Boys' Unemployment Fund, and in the establishment of the Plunket Home in Kent Terrace. In recent years he has travelled extensively, visiting the principal cities in Great Britain, United States of America, Canada, Holland, Germany, Belgium, France, Italy and Austria. While abroad, he studied industrial and housing conditions and kept in touch with the latest educational developments.

Mr. Appleton wholeheartedly denounces Socialism. A product of the Liberal and Reform regimes, he stands for the freedom of the individual and the right of each person to pursue his or her own course without State interference or regimentation. He is married, with a family of five.

Minister has said that it is all a matter of money. There is no consistency in their remarks, and frankly," Mr. Falconer added, "I do not think they have a plan it all."
