STATEMENT DENIED
HOUSING AT OTAKI
Speaking at Plimmerton on Friday night Mr. L. G. Lowry, Labour candidate for Otaki, gave an emphatic denial to the statement reported to have been made by Mr. J. W. Andrews, National candidate for Hutt, at his meeting in Petone last Thursday. Mr. Andrews was reported to have said: "The Government has bought low-lying land at Otaki which is costing them £300 a section. They are the biggest muddlers and blunderers the country has ever known."
• "Now let us deal with the facts," said Mr. Lowry. "The Government has purchased two blocks of land for houses in Otaki, No. 1 block containing less than three acres was purchased for £250. Houses are being erected on five sections, leaving a balance of one and a half acres for future use. No. 2 block contains three roods 26.5 perches, slightly less than one acre, and was purchased for £105. Even assuming two houses only were erected on this block the cost would not exceed £52 10s per section, a vast difference from £300 per section as mentioned by Mr. Andrews."
