PUBLIC MISGIVING
RESULTS OF PLAN
RISING TIDE IN BRITAIN
LONDON, October 4
The main interest in the aftermath of the crisis is centred on the question whether there will be a General Election in Britain in November.
The huge volume of letters pouring into the newspapers showing the rising tide of public misgiving with the results of the Munich agreement, coupled with the Government's insistence on the need for increasing armaments and introducing national service, is some indication that the Government is unlikely to achieve anything approaching a sweeping victory as some Government optimists first anticipated.
The general feeling of the man in the street is one of suspicion of Herr Hitler's assurance that he will make no more territorial demands in Europe, while it is taken as a matter of course that he will soon demand the return of the German colonies.
The "Manchester Guardian," in an editorial today, declares there are some curious gaps in Mr. Chamberlain's defence of the Munich agreement. "He said not one word regarding the scandalous provision that the Czechs must surrender their defences intact, and ignored the question of compensation and the release of Czech prisoners. He did not mention President Benes, nor did he explain how the Czechs' indefensible frontiers are to be defended. His declaration that we must remain on our guard is a fitting climax, as he has left every important question unanswered."
