1938 WHEAT CROP
SURPLUS CRISIS THREATENS
(Eeceived October 5, 10 a.m.)
WASHINGTON. October 4
The Stanford Research Institute estimates that the world's 1938 wheat crop will amount to 5,000,000,000 bushels, the greatest crop in history.
The institute says that the carry-over will be at least 1,070,000,000, thus threatening a surplus crisis unless the nations relax competition and reduce acreage.
"The present situation, which has been developing for1 ten years, is thatinternational competition in wheat means competition between Governments," says the institute. "The stage is so critical that a compromise is likely to be forced before many months."
