JUVENILES TRIED
PARADES AT TRENTHAM
The only two-year-olds from Trentham who have yet had racing experience this season are Beau' Vite and Siglow, who ran at Marton, but there will be ten or eleven at the Masterton Meeting next week and most of these and one or two oi;hers will also be racing at the Wellington Meeting the following week. In order to accustom these youngsters to the barrier and to sprinting with colours up a series of parades were conducted on the Trentham course yesterday morning. It was the first time the course proper has been opened to the juveniles this season. The course was much cut about after the meeting in July, but it is now back in excellent order and ] the recent fine weather has dried out the going. Yesterday's parades were down the arm of the course from the j six furlongs barrier to the crossing to the straight, a distance of about 2Jt furlongs. I The role of starter was assumed by H. A Telford, who was very patient with the youngsters and encouraged them to stand and face the barrier. All the dispaiches were good, though after the release of the tapes some of the greener juveniles did not know what to do. The experience should be of great benefit to them, and such parades might be staged more often than they are. Seventeen two-year-olds were saddled up for the parades, and they were divided into four divisions. The riders all had colours up, most of them with the correct colours. The following were the results: — First Division. W. Higgins's br c Beau Livre, by Beau Pere—Passbook (S. Wilson) • , • 1 W. Higgins's br c Siglow, by Siegfried—All Bright (G. Flood) .. 2 W. Higgins's br g First Draft, by Safari—Sight Draft (A. G. P. Newnham) ■. ■, 3 R. H. Edkins's b c War Lord, by Lord Warden —Vennachar (P. Burgess) 0 Beau Livre, going easily, came up at the finish to score by a neck, with a short neck separating the other pair. War Lord did not leave the barrier. All four youngsters are trained by H. A. Telford. Time, 31£ sec. Beau Livre is a half-brother to Deficit and he is generally conceded to be one of the classiest-looking youngsters trained at Trentham in recent years. He and War Lord are nominated for Masterton. Second Division. A. H. Devine's b f Equity, b3' Inflation—Divola (R. L. Hitchen) .. 1 A. A. Stichbury's b f Sceptre, by Bulandshar—Silver Strand (F. Power) , 2 A. McKenzie's eh f , by Defoe —Switch On (R. Hawes) .. 3 B. McKnight's b f Autolite, by Autopay—Lucidity (L. T. Nesbitt) • 0 Only the first pair made a decent beginning, as the Switch On filly ran off the track and Autolite stood on the mark. Sceptre led early, but Equity finished strongly to be three lengths clear at the end. Equity as trained by T. Yates and Sceptre by H. Pritchard. No time was taken. Equity and Sceptre are both engaged at Masterton. Equity is well forward and possesses a useful turn of pace, with evidence also of some stamina. Her dam is a sister to Debut, and her grandam,. Avola, was a successful and consistent performer whose wins included the Feilding Cup. Third Division. Q. Donald, Jun.'s, eh f Wedding Eve, by Excitement—Ritual (S.G.Robinson) .... ••,;••• 1 H. H, and H. N. Barlow's blk g Prudent Prince, by Lord Quex _ —Squeeze (S. Wilson) .... 2 H. B. Lorigan's br c Gothic, by Doric—Sister Vamp (R. A. Hawkings)1 . '• .•• , d J. A. Robertson's b f , by Bulandshar— Penelophon (A. Sagar) v Again only the first pair left the barrier satisfactorily, as Gothic dwelt and the Bulandshar filly did not go away at all. Wedding Eve appeared to be always in front and she was two lengths to the good at the finish, but Prudent Prince was going along smoothly throughout without being ridden as vigorously as the filly was. Gothic chased the leaders and wound up half a dozen lengths behind them. All four are in H. B. Lorigan's stable. Time, 33sec. Wedding Eve, who was bought at the Sydney Easter sales, is from the same family as the Melbourne Cup winner Artilleryman, Valicare, and Siren, and she and Prudent Prince, who is out of Cuddle's full-sister Squeeze, .have been in work since the early winter. They are both very cleverly named. Wedding Eve and Gothic (another Australian purchase) are entered for Masterton. Fourth Division. R. Stewart's br c Beau Vite, by Beau Pere —Dominant (S. WUE. L S°Riddiford's 'br' f' Lady' Drake, by Beau Pere— Duckling (W. J)gyjg) ........ " R. C. Penman's br f Anita Foe, by Defoe—Pollyanna (D. Lamb) . 6 F. Kettlewell's b c Tristan, by Siegfried—Tareka (J. McCauley) . 0 W. Smart's eh f ——-, by Defoe— • Manurewa (A. Foster) ....... U Beau Vite and Lady Drake, two high-priced youngsters with all the quality of their sire's stock, outclassed the others. Lady Drake was carried off the track by Tristan who caught the tapes and swerved out at the start, but she quickly ran back and was only half a length behind the cantering Beau Vite at the end. Both are trained by T. P. George Anita Foe who is held on lease by her trainer,,was three lengths back, with Tristan .' several lengths away. The Manurewa filly ran about # after the start and was eased up. Time 34sec. Beau Vite is out of the Martian mare Dominant, a full-sister to Nones, Menelaus, Lovematch (dam of Mptere and grandam of Quadroon), Left (dam of Wotan and Game Camngton), and he looks certain to develop into a class horse. No line was obtained on him at Marton, as he failed to, begin, but he was smartly away yesterday. Lady Drake, whose preparation was checked by a cold, is out of a full-sis-S to" Admiral Drake and Francis Drake, and she promises to be one of the leaders of her sex before the season closes. Beau Vite. Anita Foe, and Tristan are entered for Masterton Lady Drake is likely to make her first appearance at the Wellington Meeting.
